Adventure Sports Tours “Puerto Sandino Surf Camp” is located in Playa Miramar just a short 2 hour drive from Managua Airport. This region of Central Nicaragua is straight west of the capital of Managua and is one of the richest areas of surf in the country. Playa Miramar is a sleepy Nicaraguan fishing village with amazingly friendly locals that are always curious to meet you and if you speak Spanish they will engage in a friendly conversation.

Less than 40 minutes away is the old city of Leon, Nicaragua where you can enjoy city trips, shopping, and sightseeing, landmark Churches from 1600’s and enjoy a great Nicaraguan or American style dinner at many different restaurants. If you are into nightlife Leon turns into a party town Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays offering night clubs and bars packed with young adults from the 6 universities in Leon.

While enjoying your Nicaraguan Surf Tour with AST, we also suggest going to the local port town of Puerto Sandino where you can get into the local vibe by watching baseball games, bar hopping and street drinking with the local’s one of our favorite activities. The locals will open their hearts and invite you have some of their favorite fish dishes or traditional Nicaraguan meals cooked by some of the best street vendors.

We always suggest bringing down some school supplies, old baseball equipment or children’s clothes since Nicaragua is one of the safest but poorest countries in Central America. The average person in Nicaragua makes $2.00 per day, and by offering something small goes a long way and can make a big difference in a child’s life. Just steps away from our property is an elementary school for first, second and third graders.

The Surf Camp is located on a bluff overlooking some of the best Nicaraguan Surf in the area with one of the best reef breaks around the local area and you will only be steps to this wave. Also within walking distance we have two beach breaks and one point break providing our Surf Tour guests options for all surf levels. The rest of the surf breaks will be accessed by our fleet of panga boats or by 4×4. See our Surfing section for additional information on the surf spots and breaks.

Our Nicaragua Surf Tours are all inclusive with the exception of alcohol beverages. You will be greeted at the airport and your surf holiday begins. We also offer surfboard rentals avoiding the high cost of additional airline fees.

• Currency: Cordobas (NIO), although USD can be used, just make sure you keep your bills no larger than $20.00 or less.  It is suggested you exchange USD to Cordobas but no more than $200.00 USD per visit pending your time in Nicaragua.

Remote, Uncrowded Surf is what you get when Surfing Central Nicaragua.  This region of Nicaragua Surf is by far the most underutilized and hard to reach surf in the country, boat access is necessary to get to the good stuff for sure.  Adventure Sports Tours offers two super Pangas, at your disposal with the exception of day of arrival and departure.  We do not charge for our boat trips, it is part of your Surf Tour Package when traveling with AST in Central Nicaragua.

We have several left point breaks, reef breaks and beach break which is very similar to the southern end of the country without a sole in sight.  Our surf guides know exactly what will be breaking, as this area is very tide driven from low to high.  The reefs and beach breaks are good to epic on the higher tides with the points following at the lower tides.

Our main attraction La Barra otherwise known as Puerto Sandino is a 300 meter left breaking on sand just outside a large estuary.  This wave has several take off zones but you want to be at the main peak, as this wave will barrel without fail.  La Barra is not for a beginner, you must be intermediate to advance to surf this wave, don’t let anyone else tell you different.

While you have several critical waves to choose from, there are super fun waves too that are assessable by 4×4 and boat.   Beginners to intermediate surfers can enjoy beautiful beach break with long trips through the estuary into a secluded beach with just a short walk through the jungle.

Increasing your experience, this region of Nicaragua enjoys 280 days a year of offshore winds providing perfectly groomed surf.  In the rainy season the winds will turn onshore around 1:00 PM but normally glasses off for in the evenings before your happy hour.

You will want a boat during your stay to hit the remote uncrowded surf spots; this is a must in Nicaragua.

Waves in this area:

Puerto Sandinois known for its sand bottom left hander breaking nearly 300 yards plus on a good day.

Puerto Sandino Inlet is near Puerto Sandino and breaks only on low tide. Advanced surfers only, this is not a place for beginner or intermediate.

Meat Grinders is a 45 minute Panga ride south towards Veracruz. The left hander breaks over a shelf which creates a massive left slab with long shoulder. There are also several other waves along the way which we do not provide names. By the way, the fishing is excellent.

Chicken bowls is the wave directly out front of the Puerto Sandino Surf Club camp. A consistent left with occasional right is all drop and pop. The wave has two bowl sections, outside and inside over the reef. Breaks best on a high tide unlike other breaks by Panga, allowing our guests more surf time and sessions.

Launch Ramps a few hundred yards south of the camp you can count on peaky, ledges breaking right and left offering some of the best skate park type surf. This beach break will deliver a punch at high tide into low.

Our accommodations in Puerto Sandino provide a real Nicaraguan experience in a traditional Nicaragua style home that has been converted into a multi guest shared area. You can enjoy private or shared accommodations depending if you have booked a surf tour with your friends, family or spouse. All of our rooms are air conditioned with four beds per room and private bath with the exception of one room which shares a bathroom. The upper floor of the surf house has a very large deck overlooking the surf with amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and our house wave out front. The deck is also our yoga area, with hardwood floors, gentle offshore winds and protection from storms in the rainy season.

The down stairs is our general area with a plasma TV, Stereo with iPod docking station so you can enjoy your favorite music while eating in the dining area or outside while playing a hardcore game of ping pong. You will feel like out surf house is your own; the staffs from the kitchen to the grounds keeper will make you feel at home without lifting a finger.

Not only do we have amazing views off the top balcony, but the same view is visible from our backyard butting up to the bluffs edge providing excellent surf and sunset views within a few steps of the sand. There are several sitting areas in our backyard so guest seem to move around and find their special spot sipping on their favorite beverage for the amazing Nicaraguan Sunsets.

We have a pool and outdoor shower so you never feel uncomfortable with the heat, simple rinse off or jump in it is that simple.

Our kitchen staff is the rave of our guests, you will have assorted meals cooked and served to you for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. We blend our meals so you get a taste of home with your Nicaraguan dishes as well. Most of our meals are made with Chicken, Fish, Beef and Pasta’s or we can customize any dish you prefer is you have special eating requirements. If you like beans, you will love the Red Silk Beans from Nicaragua they are delicious with just about anything.

Lets not forget that we have our own boats and a large amount of fishing gear, so when you visit you must go fishing and serve your catch of the day in a Ceviche or Grilled to perfection.

” I want to compliment AST for a first class surf trip you provided my 15 year old son and I, to northern Nicaragua. I’m 54 and have surfed for 40 years, during this time I have travelled to many places. Your package deal was perfect for us.
It began with an on time airport pick up (Marcos is an exceptional driver) and then we were at the house in 2 hours. Carlos was waiting for us and carried everything up to our room. Marhellia had fresh fish and vegetables ready for our lunch. We then took a long walk down the beach, which is right out the back door of the AST house. Four surf breaks within walking distance, but Miramar was our favorite.
The facilities you have are great. Marhellia prepared the best food and the sheets on the bed were clean and as comfortable as the ones at a fine hotel. Carlos was so eager to help with anything we needed. I felt like a sissy when I’d come out the water and he’d take my board, and hand me a gator aid. Rodrigo was so nice and is amazing with technology; my son really bonded with him. Last but not least, Marcos was great; he made sure we caught good waves every day and kept a step ahead of our every need. He is a very capable, savvy hombre.
I’ve been blessed by my hard work, and I wanted a camp that would take the stress out of travelling to Nicaragua. We felt safe and your employees made sure we were on the best spot at the right tide. I was surprised by the amount of permits needed to get a boat to the breaks, but Marcos and Rodrigo stayed on top of the situation and put us on really great surf! The other camps would have been a nightmare for us, as they do not provide the level of services or clean environment. Your people were business like and respectful.
