Galapagos Islands
Located off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands spans 137 miles. The chain of Islands covers both the northern and southern hemispheres with Isabela Island directly on the equator. Our accommodations sit on San Cristobal Island where surfing is year round. The location of the island provides excellent surf conditions being that there are swells coming from both the North and the South.
Enjoy 8 days and 7 nights at Hotel Opuntia that is just steps away from the newly constructed boardwalk on Playa de Oro. The hotel is walking distance to Punta Corola to the West, one of the top waves in South America, and El Canon and Tongo Reef to the East.
Aside from surfing San Cristobal’s warm waters and epic waves, the island offers several activities to keep you occupied during your stay. The boat (included) can take you on snorkeling excursions to Leon Dormido or Aislar de Lobos. You can also go hiking on the volcanic landscape, fish the clear waters or visit the Darwin research center.
Although surfing in the Galapagos Islands is recommended for experienced surfers, many of the spots offer perfect conditions for learning. December through May is the recommended time for ideal surfing conditions. Even though this is the wet season, the temperature is roughly between 80-90 degrees.
Punta Carola
This is considered to be the best wave in the Galapagos, and is one of the top waves in South America. It offers square barrels and long rides. It provides fairly consistent surf, and at high tide you will find waves that average up to ten feet (right-hand wave). However, this wave can get even bigger! Low tide is perfect for boogie boarders and beginning surfers. It also has a post-card worthy beach with excellent snorkeling when you want a break from the waves.
El Cañón
A 10 minutes walk from the hotel, you will find this great surfing bay with fast tubing waves averaging 6 feet (left-hand wave). El Cañón takes N, NW, W and strong SW swells. It is also a favorite surfing spot for sea lions.
La Loberia
A 10 minute drive from the hotel, here you will find very consistent 6 foot waves that are both right and left-handers. There is also a beautiful white sand beach with terrific snorkeling.
Tongo Reef
A southerly and westerly swell that provides fun tubes (left-hand wave). Best of all, this wave can be ridden for over 300 meters!
Manglecito
A 15-20 minute boat ride away, Manglecito is a gorgeous beach with fun 6 foot right-hand waves. It requires a strong N or NW swell and must be done at low tide, but the wave lasts 6 hours.
Casa Opuntia practically sits on the ocean. There is only a newly built boardwalk that separates you from the lukewarm waters. Its restaurant features some of San Cristobal’s best sea food dishes to be enjoyed surrounded by endemic gardens and perfect ocean views.
