Getting to the Mentawai is quite a journey for most people. Some of you will be traveling half way around the world to get here. After a long flight from home, you will arrive in Padang, Indonesia, most likely via Singapore Jakarta, or Kuala Lumpur and will be greeted at the airport by one of the Freedom team.

After introductions and a quick briefing, you and your gear will be transported to a comfortable location to have some refreshments and unwind from your long trip while the boat is prepared for your arrival.

Once on board, you can stow your gear and crash out. The crossing time varies depending on the weather and the boat you’ve chosen and will typically be done overnight while you sleep. By the time you wake up, the crew will be ready to serve you breakfast and get you into the surf for the first session of your trip.

You will spend the next 11 days surfing the finest waves the planet has to offer. Our expert captain / surf guides will get you into the best surf possible according to the prevailing conditions, your desire, and your ability. While the greenest beginners may sometimes find themselves watching from the channel, the rest of us will find bliss in the absolute perfection of the Mentawai.

And there is plenty of fun to be had between surfs as well. Check out the spectacular coral reefs of West Sumatra with snorkeling gear provided on board, or take a trip ashore to explore the tropical islands and local cultures. If you’re more into relaxation, sit back, read a book, catch some rays, or have a cold one and watch the action unfold from the shaded comfort of the yacht.

Just like the surf, the fishing in this area is world class as well. All our boats come equipped with top of the line fishing gear. Try your luck at trolling while traveling between breaks, or stock the dinghy up with some beers for a late afternoon troll in a picturesque lagoon after a hard day of surfing.

And, to ensure that all these great times don’t go unrecorded, some of our captain / guides offer a photographic service to document your journey. For a reasonable fee, you will go home with a CD covering your entire trip, most likely with the best surfing pictures of yourself you will ever have.

Expect great food at each of your 3 daily meals, and enjoy refreshments and snacks throughout the day. At night, relax in the aircon while watching the latest DVD’s or slide show from the day’s surf session on a giant flat screen TV. When you’re ready to crash out, you will be sleeping in some of the most comfortable cabins in the islands.

Luxury Surf in the Mentawai’s

The Mentawai Island chain lies roughly 100 miles offshore from the largest city in West Sumatra, Padang, which is the base for all Mentawai charter operations. The island group consists of the four main islands of Siberut, Sipora, and North and South Pagai. These islands are further surrounded by many smaller islets, the entire chain stretching from North to SouthEast in a line wide open to the Indian Ocean swell factory.

The Mentawai are inhabited by local fishermen whose villages dot the islands. They are friendly and welcoming, and visits to their beaches and communities are highly recommended for a full Mentawai experience. The indigenous cultures, clear blue waters, dense tropical backdrops, and sultry trade winds provide for a truly idyllic island experience.

The Waves

There are two main seasons in the Mentawai: the dry season, which runs from around February to October, and the wet season, which takes up November to January. While the wet season is certainly rainier, one will experience plenty of refreshing tropical showers in the dry season as well. Average air temperatures range between 72°F (22°C) to 90°F (32°C). Water temp runs a pretty constant 80°F (27°C). Wetsuits are never necessary, but tropical wax is always required!

The Mentawai’s position in the Indian Ocean put them in the ultimate spot to pick up phenomenal amounts of swell. Add that swell to the ideal geography of the islands and you end up with the seemingly endless array of perfect set-ups on offer. In no other place on earth can you find such an abundance of world class waves in such a small area breaking with such consistency. There are set-ups for every type of wind and swell condition. Clean, head high waves are virtually guaranteed even if there is no obvious groundswell running.

While great waves can be found in the Mentawai all year ’round, most people choose to go during the dry season between March and November when the Indian Ocean is at its most active. Whatever month you go, and whatever the wind, swell, and tide conditions happen to be, somewhere in the Mentawai will be working and very likely pumping.

Perhaps the best thing about the islands is that the perfection isn’t limited to the dozen or so famous breaks you’ve seen in the surf mags and movies. There are plenty of other lesser known and even yet to be discovered breaks that would be considered a dream wave in any surfer’s book.

The aft deck is a covered outdoor lounge area with seating for 10 guests around a large table. It’s a great place to hang out in the day to watch the action from the shade and on breezy, balmy evenings it becomes the ideal outdoor dining patio.

As you step inside, you enter the aft-saloon area which includes the galley, another large table / seating area, and a plasma TV hooked up to a DVD entertainment system. This is a good place to have your chef whip up a quick snack while you catch a movie between surfs.
Further forward and up a short flight of stairs you will find the mid-saloon area with wraparound windows offering a good view of the surf. Kick back and have a cold drink as you check the waves and chat with your buddies.

Finally, another short flight of stairs takes you down to the main forward saloon / lounge area where you will find another large plasma TV and a huge, comfy sofa lounger. This will probably be your main after surf lounging and socializing area and comes with all the comforts you’d expect from a luxury living room.
